How to Convert MP4 to Images (JPEG, PNG, WebP)

February 5, 2026 · 4 min read

MP4 is the most common video format in the world, and sometimes you need what's inside: the individual frames. Whether you want a thumbnail, a reference image, or a full sequence for editing or machine learning, converting MP4 to images is straightforward with the right tool.

Why Convert MP4 to Images?

  • Content creation — pull the perfect frame for a YouTube thumbnail or social post
  • Documentation — screenshot a specific moment from a screen recording
  • Machine learning — generate image datasets from labeled video clips
  • Video editing — use a frame as a reference or overlay
  • Education — capture slides from a recorded lecture or webinar

Step-by-Step: Convert MP4 in Your Browser

Open FrameRipper and upload your MP4. Nothing is sent to a server — the file stays on your device.

  1. 1Upload your MP4 — it stays on your device.
  2. 2Check the duration shown after loading to plan your frame count.
  3. 3Set frame count. For a specific moment, 5–10 may be enough. For dense coverage, go higher.
  4. 4Choose JPEG for general use, PNG for lossless editing, WebP for web output.
  5. 5Click Extract Frames, browse the live preview gallery, then Download ZIP.

What Quality Will the Images Be?

Frames are extracted at the video's native resolution. A 1080p MP4 produces 1920×1080 images. A 4K MP4 produces 3840×2160 images.

JPEG quality is set to 92% — visually identical to lossless for most content. PNG is completely lossless. The only factor affecting sharpness is the source video quality.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Extract more frames than you think you need — you can always delete extras
  • Use a high frame count for fast-moving content to catch sharp, non-blurry moments
  • Use PNG for text-heavy content like presentations and screencasts
  • Check the preview gallery before downloading — abort early if something looks off
